About Japanese Language

  • Japanese Language is actually called 'NIHONGO'. This is the same with the name 'Japan,' which is referred to as 'Nihon' or 'Nippon' in the native dialect.

  • Japanese is one of the most fast-paced spoken languages in the world.Interestingly enough, Japan has a spoken syllable rate of nearly eight syllables per second. That beats out Spanish, French and Italian.

  • Japanese is considered one of the most unique languages in the world.

  • The Japanese language relies on not one but three different scripts - Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji - which are differentiated both by their distinct appearances and by their use.

Three Scripts of Japanese Language

There are three main scripts in Japanese language namely Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji.

  • Kanji: They are Chinese characters borrowed by Japan.

  • Hiragana: This the original writings script. It is made up of 46 characters, used for verbs and adjective inflections and simple words.

  • Katakana: This is the third script of the Japanese language, mainly used for foreign words, names, and loanwords.

There is also a fourth script called Romaji

  • Romaji: It is method of writing Japanese in English alphabets.

International Certification Exam

JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) a standardized criterion-referenced test to certify Japanese language proficiency for non-native speakers, covering language knowledge, reading ability, and listening ability. The JLPT has five levels.
